View FPIN information

The SAN Health Report view and the Fabric Performance Impact Notifications (FPINs) view allow the user to determine the health of their storage network.

Prerequisites

See Roles and associated permissions to determine the user roles that can perform this task.

About this task

Fabric Performance Impact Notification (FPIN) is a facility that is provided by switch vendors. The switch reports to the storage system using the following types of notifications:

  • Link Integrity Notification
  • Path Congestion Notification
  • Peer-path Congestion Notification (Switch congestion that may spread to this path)
  • Delivery Notification

Fabric alerts are received from the switch and forwarded for display in the alerts view. This allows performance degradation analysis to be performed more quickly.

You can view FPIN alert information (only available on storage systems running PowerMaxOS 10.1.0.0 or later) in the Alerts view. There is an option in the Alerts Policies dialog to disable or enable FPIN Alerts (enabled by default). Disabling FPIN alerts results in new FPIN alerts no longer being displayed in the Alerts view.

Steps

  1. Select a storage system running PowerMaxOS 10.1.0.0 or later.
  2. Select the System Health tab.
  3. In the Actions panel, click View SAN Health.

A screen is displayed with two tabs: a SAN Health Report tab and a FPINs tab. See View SAN health information for information about the SAN Health Report tab. The following properties display in the FPINs tab:

    • Dir:Port —Dir:Port ID
    • Detect WWN—Detect WWN
    • Protocol—Protocol, for example, SCSI FC
    • Attach WWN—Attach WWN
    • FCID—Fibre Channel ID
    • Detection Time—The time that the notification was detected.
    • Storage Groups—Number of storage groups impacted by the FPIN
  4. Select a FPIN and click Details icon to view additional properties.

The following properties display for a FPIN:

    • FPIN Type—FPIN type
    • Director—Director ID
    • Port—Port associated with the director
    • Protocol—Protocol, for example, SCSI FC
    • Attach WWN—Attach WWN
    • Detect WWN—Detect WWN
    • FCID—Fibre Channel ID
    • Detection Time—The time that the notification was detected.
    • Storage Groups—Number of storage groups affected by the FPIN. Click the number next to Storage Groups to view the list of these storage groups.

The following properties display for a selected storage group:

    • Director Identification—Director ID
    • Director Port—Port associated with the director
    • Array Negotiated Speed (Gb/Sec)—Array negotiated speed
    • Director Port Speed (Gb/Sec)—Director port speed
    • Director Identification—Director ID
